(pl. -ies) 1 a feeling of discontented or resentful longing aroused by another's better fortune etc. 2 the object or ground of this feeling (their house is the envy of the neighbourhood). --v.tr. (-ies, -ied) feel envy of (a person, circumstances, etc.) (I envy you your position). Derivatives envier n. Etymology: ME f. OF envie f. L invidia f. invidere envy (as IN-(1), videre see)
